When I first was learning to knit, a fellow knitter told me that when you find a friend who appreciates something you’ve made, remember that person again and again. But when someone doesn’t truly value or understand what goes into a handmade or handknit gift, just let it go and buy gifts for that person in the future.
For the friend who may not understand the work and love that factor into a handcrafted gift, here is a link to nice purchasable gift ideas. Many are handmade with love by someone else so there’s no sparing thoughtfulness, but it will take you much less time to order something than to make it yourself.
For the friend who cherishes anything you make, throw yourself into the knitting, sewing, or crafting project with the enthusiasm and love you have for your friend. I am proud to say that I have several friends who value the time, skill, and love I put into the things I made and gave to their babies.
Here is a recap of the gifts I’ve made for babies since 2009 including links to the original posts so you can get ideas for your own baby gift projects. In the cases when I thought up the ‘pattern’ for the item, I give instructions on how to make it. However, if the pattern was from a book or someone else’s creation, I only link to it as to respect their copyright by not reposting it here. But linking to it, that’s the next best thing for convenience sake!
BLANKETS: Three made with the Doubled Up Yarn approach I favor.
Baby boy Daniel received the Blue Skies Baby Blanket. The blue and cream combination turned out nicely and I learned a lot in the process. The edges has more stretch than the previous blanket project and I paired the self-striping yarn with a coordinating color which really added a lot to it.

Baby girl Kate received the Vanilla Mint Chip Blanket. This deliciously refreshing mint green and cream blanket took me three weeks to knit and was my first baby blanket ever. Also my first adventure with moss stitch. The green was chosen because the parents-to-be selected pale green for their nursery theme.

Baby boy Miller received the Squid Baby Blanket. In under the sea shades, this blanket was blue acrylic yarn paired with a superwash wool sock yarn in blue, green, and brown hues. I added stripes at two sides – pale blue with brown for one end and green at the other end. The effect was a funky retro look in earthy-oceany colors.

JUMPERS, HATS, ONESIES, BIBS: Hand knit and hand sewn wearables
Baby boy Quinn received the Foldover Jumper in a soft Tivoli yarn in a golden autumn hue. It is washable, wearable, and has a wide neck for easy-on, easy-off.

Baby boy Toby received the Glub Glub Fishy Set, including a Glub Glub Grub Bib, an Appliqued Fish Onesie, and a crocheted cardigan with hat.

Baby surprise will receive the Crofter Baby Beanie. Knit around Thanksgiving with love. It is so soft with a bit of stretch and beautiful neutral hues perfect for a baby boy or baby girl. I’m hoping to applique a onesie with a brown fish, leaf or heart to pair with this, but even on its own this hat is a wonderful gift any baby will enjoy.

Baby boy yet to be named will receive the blue Chocolate Fishy Bib. If time allows, I will make a onesie or hat to coordinate.

Baby surprise will receive the white Sunshine Fishy Bib. If time allows, I will make a onesie or hat to coordinate.

Wow! What a selection of different things you made! I just love some of the wool you have used, particularly the under the sea blanket. Finally, over the last six months we have got three places which sell wool in Sligo town, one of which is a dedicated wool shop…so now I can visit your place again for ideas instead of turning green with envy or drooling over the keyboard!!! Don’t laugh- its a regular problem…
You’ve been a busy little bee over the past few months!! Each project is so cute!
Just back from Europe and busy sorting and washing clothes. Not much time for knitting this week. Hope to get back to it next week, in Halifax. Haven’t any babies to knit for though, but your projects are inspiring enough that I wish sommeone I know had a little one to knit for. Oh well, I’ve promised my niece a fairisle hat matching the one I gave to her mom for Christmas. She tried to ‘adopt’ the original but her mom said ‘Hands off! That’s my hat!’
