Stitch markers are one of those things you don’t realize you’re missing until you need them for a project and such is the case with me. I’ve never bought stitch markers. I’ve had four friends give me different kinds and I cherish each one. Four friends, five different stitch marker styles – a chance to figure out what I like. Of course, now I am casting on a larger project and thinking stitch markers might be nice to keep track of the number of stitches on my needle so I don’t need to recount until I finally get to 297 (yes, it’s a shawl). And a friend who recently made her own inspired me to consider making them too, so here are a list of links that look very helpful – I’ll let you know how I get on.
And I make mine differently.
I’ve been using charms, that I scavenge from clearanced little-kid jewelry, and findings from the local craft store. The ones I like best are the Beadalon ‘tags’, which are a circle with a tiny circle attached. I put a tiny jump ring through the tiny circle, and the top of whatever charm I’m using.
If I’d met you at Sheep and Wool I’d have given you a couple!
Seems like every year I miss the chance to meet up with you in DC. Next Spring, let’s stay in close touch so we don’t miss out again, ok?
I love making stitch markers! I use old earrings, pendants, beads, whatever. In a pinch, you can also use paper clips, the rings on your fingers, or soda can tabs. (Can you tell I lose a lot of stitchmarkers?)
I rarely lose stitch markers but there’s time for that to change now that LB is on the scene. Maybe I should get ones that if eaten can be easily digested?
